SBL ETC get together

16
With SBL just around the corner it would be good to have a get together for a meal and some personal catch up for ETC bloggers and regular readers/commenters. I haven't really had much time to think about the schedule (due to lots of teaching and trying to finish my papers for SBL!), so suggestions would be welcome.
I see that some Bibliobloggers are getting together on Sunday evening (see the post from Michael Halcomb), so it may be better to avoid the clash and support that gathering if we can (or get to a church - not always easy at SBL). I personally would prefer a dinner since the lunches always turn out to be a bit rushed (especially if, as last year, one has a paper to present straight afterwards!), but I would love to hear suggestions in the comments.

  1. I am ok with any time other than noon on Saturday. Too may of us are giving papers that day. Sunday seems to be out of the picture with IGNTP and the Bibliobloggers. Maybe lunch or dinner on Monday? We could meet at the entrance to the conference center here.

  2. Nice picture, but I'm guessing we won't be in short sleeves.

  3. Monday will be fine for me. I wonder what the weather is like in Boston at this time of the year. Rain and snow?

  4. Boston weather could be what we are having right now in Minneapolis: snow, wind, and 0 degrees Celsius. It could also be very nice; the last time the meeting was in Boston, I recall taking an afternoon stroll on a sunny 16-18 C. day. It could also, I suppose, be like the Toronto SBL meeting: when I stepped off the bus from the airport to the hotel, snow was blowing horizontally down the street.
    cheers, Mike

  6. We've got nearly 10 so far for our gathering. All are welcome; if you can let me know ahead of time (for reservations sake), it'd be helpful, although, I plan on getting a few extra seats just in case. Hope to meet some of you there, blessings!

  9. Peter wrote, "(or get to a church - not always easy at SBL)"--true,
but IBR (Institute for Biblical Research, the American cousin (sister?) of Tyndale House) sponsors a Sunday morning worship service open to all at SBL:
    11/23/2008
    7:30 AM to 8:30 AM
Room: Meeting Room 304 - CC

The service includes prayers, congregational singing--which has always been very stirring--readings from Scripture and a meditation.

IBR invites anyone interested to attend, and please feel free to share the information with others.

I think I'll make that a new post.

  11. So are we heading for Monday evening for an ETC meal? That would suit me fine - shall we meet where Christian said - at the entrance to the conference center - at around 7-7.15pm? By then we should have scoped out a good place to eat.

  12. Do we want to get a count, so we can make reservations?

  13. I should be free on Monday for either lunch or dinner. My wife will be with me, so the company will be greatly upgraded for all!

  14. Retrospectively: this was a fantastic gathering in a very cozy Italian restaurant, VinnyT:s. Since Peter Head could not get into the room where the bookreview of Parker's new introduction took place, he went out and reserved tables at this restaurant instead. We are all grateful to him that he did so.
